It is a genuinely good engine. Properly serviced and fed decent fuel, these routinely go a very long way. When they do fail it is usually one of a small number of specific causes, and one of them matters more than all the others put together.

Before you buy anything — check the damper pulleyIf your engine is rattling, that noise is very often the crankshaft damper pulley rather than the timing chain. The Fuel System Is What Ends Most D4HB Engines

The D4HB runs a Bosch CP4 high pressure pump at 1,800 bar feeding piezo injectors, and it does not tolerate poor or contaminated diesel. When that pump begins to fail it does not fail quietly — it generates fine metal particles that circulate through the entire fuel system, clogging and destroying the injectors downstream.

That changes how this job has to be doneIf your engine failed because of the fuel system, the debris is now in your tank, your lines, your rail and your injectors. Fit a new engine to that and you will contaminate it within weeks.

What has to be dealt with before a new engine goes in

1The high pressure pump — replaced, not cleaned.
2All injectors — replaced or professionally tested. Debris damaged injectors will destroy a new engine’s bores.
3The fuel rail and lines — flushed or replaced.
4The fuel tank and in-tank pump or filter — this is the one people skip, and it is where the debris settles.
5Fuel filter — new, and a second change shortly after commissioning.

It is not a cheap list. It is considerably cheaper than a second engine, and it is the difference between a warranty that stands and a claim that does not. Every D4HB engine for sale here is brand new, so the only variable left is the fuel system feeding it.

My engine failed. Do I need to replace the fuel system too?

If the failure came from the fuel system, yes, and it is not optional. A failing CP4 pump sends metal particles through the pump, lines, rail, injectors and into the tank. Fit a new engine to a contaminated fuel system and you will contaminate it within weeks. If the engine failed for another reason, have the fuel system checked before you decide.
