Buyer's Guide

How It Works

Replacing an engine sounds daunting — it isn't, once you know the steps. Here's the entire process from the moment you suspect trouble to the day your vehicle is back on the road, so you know exactly what happens, when, and what's expected of you.

What You'll Need

Have these ready and the whole process moves faster — most delays come from missing information at the start.

A proper diagnosis — confirmation from a mechanic that the engine (not something cheaper) is the problem
Your engine code — e.g. 1KD-FTV, 2TR-FE, 4D56 — stamped on the block or compliance plate
Vehicle details — make, model, year and ideally your VIN
A mechanic booked — or at least a workshop quote for the labour
A delivery address that can take heavy freight — often your workshop
A rough budget — engine plus labour, so there are no surprises later
The Process

Step by Step

1

Confirm You Actually Need an Engine

Before anything else

Not every serious noise means a new engine. Before you spend, get a qualified mechanic to diagnose the fault properly — a compression or leak-down test, and a look at oil and coolant condition, will usually tell the story.

Some faults are repairable. Others — a spun bearing, bent conrod, cracked block, or a head gasket failure that's already cooked the head — mean replacement is the sensible call. Our Learn the Lingo glossary explains what your mechanic is describing, in plain English.

Worth Knowing

If a mechanic quotes a rebuild, ask what's actually being replaced. A rebuild on a high-kilometre block still leaves you with an old block — a brand-new engine often costs less than a thorough rebuild once labour is counted.

2

Confirm Fitment & Place Your Order

Same day — online or by phone

Find your engine using Find by Make / Model, or call us on 0461 265 808 with your engine code and VIN and we'll confirm the correct match before you pay. Every engine is covered by our 100% fitment guarantee for the vehicles listed on the product page.

At checkout you'll decide two things worth thinking about:

  • Extended warranty — 2 or 3 years instead of the standard 1 year
  • Labour warranty — covers your mechanic's removal and refit costs if a claim is ever approved, so you're not paying labour twice

All prices include GST and a tax invoice is issued with every order. You'll get an order confirmation email immediately.

3

We Prepare & Hot Test Your Engine

1–2 business days

Before your engine leaves our Molendinar warehouse it's hot tested — run on a test bench, brought up to temperature, and monitored to confirm it starts, idles and runs correctly. Problems get caught here, not in your engine bay.

A unique QR code is fitted to the top of the motor. Scan it and you can watch the hot test video of your actual engine running before it was crated — full traceability, no guesswork.

The engine is then secured in a purpose-built crate on a pallet, protected for heavy freight.

Ships Without Coolant

Engines are dispatched without coolant for safe transit. Your mechanic fills all fluids to specification and primes the system before first start — never start the engine before it's properly filled and primed.

4

Delivery to Your Door — or Your Workshop

6–8 business days standard

Shipping is free Australia-wide via Team Global Express, with free postage insurance included. Express (3–5 business days) is available at checkout. You'll receive a tracking number by email the moment it's dispatched.

Engines weigh anywhere from roughly 100 kg to well over 250 kg. The carrier delivers to the address — unloading is your responsibility, so you'll need a forklift, engine crane, or several strong hands.

Our Recommendation

Enter your mechanic's workshop as the delivery address. Workshops have forklifts and cranes, they can inspect the crate on arrival, and the engine is already where it needs to be. Just let them know it's coming.

Inspect the crate when it arrives. If there's any transit damage, photograph it and contact us immediately — that's what the insurance is for. Full shipping details →

5

What Your Mechanic Does — The Installation

Typically 1–3 days in the workshop

Installation must be carried out by a qualified mechanic — this is a requirement of your warranty, and you'll need the workshop invoice as proof if you ever make a claim. You don't need to do any of this yourself, but knowing the sequence means you can follow the conversation and spot if something's being skipped.

Here's what a proper engine swap involves:

RemoveOld engine out
TransferAncillaries across
RenewWear items
FitNew engine in
Fill & PrimeOil pressure up
StartChecks & road test
  • Removal — the vehicle is drained of fluids, the battery disconnected, and the old engine disconnected from the wiring harness, fuel lines, cooling system, exhaust and transmission, then lifted out with an engine crane.
  • Transferring your ancillaries — depending on what your engine includes, your mechanic moves across external components such as the alternator, starter motor, A/C compressor, power steering pump, manifolds, injectors and sensors. Each product listing states exactly what's supplied.
  • Replacing wear items while access is easy — this is the moment to renew the clutch or torque converter, rear main seal, engine mounts, thermostat, water pump, belts and hoses. Doing them now costs a fraction of doing them later.
  • Fitting the new engine — lowered in, bolted to the mounts, and reconnected to the transmission, harness, cooling, fuel and exhaust systems.
  • Filling and priming — engine oil and coolant filled to specification, the system bled of air, and oil pressure established before the engine is started.
  • First start and checks — the engine is started, brought up to temperature, and checked for leaks, correct oil pressure, cooling performance and fault codes.
Don't Skip the Cause

If the old engine died from overheating, the cooling system caused it — a tired radiator, water pump or thermostat will kill the new engine just as fast. Ask your mechanic to address the root cause, not just the engine. Same goes for a blocked oil supply or a failing turbo.

Labour Cost

Labour is charged by your workshop, not by us, and varies with vehicle and location. Get a written quote before you commit so you can budget the full job. [CHECK: add a typical hours/cost range here if you'd like — e.g. "commonly 8–15 hours".]

6

Questions to Ask Your Mechanic

Before work starts

You don't need to be an expert — you just need to ask the right things. These five questions cover most of what goes wrong.

"What caused the old engine to fail?"If the root cause isn't fixed, the new engine is at risk. This is the single most important question.
"Which parts are you transferring across, and are they in good condition?"Old ancillaries can fail soon after and look like an engine fault.
"What else should we replace while the engine is out?"Clutch, seals, mounts, water pump, thermostat, belts — cheap now, expensive later.
"Will you prime the oil system before first start?"Establishing oil pressure before the engine fires protects the bearings from day one.
"Can I get an itemised invoice showing the install?"You need this as proof of professional installation for any warranty claim.
7

The Run-In Period

First several hundred to ~1,000 km

A new engine needs its parts to bed in together. How the first few hundred kilometres are driven has a real effect on how long the engine lasts — and following the correct run-in procedure is required for your warranty to remain valid.

In general terms that means avoiding sustained high revs and heavy loads early on, varying your speed rather than sitting at one constant RPM, avoiding towing or hard acceleration, and completing the first oil change on schedule.

We Email You the Procedure

You don't have to remember any of this — after your engine is dispatched we send the full run-in procedure straight to your inbox, so you and your mechanic have the exact steps in writing. [CHECK: confirm timing/content of your automated run-in email.]

Our YouTube install tutorials cover first start and run-in guidance too.

8

Warranty & Ongoing Support

1 year from delivery (extendable)

Your warranty period starts from the date of confirmed delivery. It covers manufacturing defects in the engine's internal components — block, heads, crankshaft, camshaft, pistons, rods, bearings and valves.

To keep cover valid: professional installation, correct run-in, and regular servicing to the manufacturer's intervals. Modifications, performance tuning and neglect (running low on oil, ignoring an overheat) void it.

If something does go wrong, call us on 0461 265 808 with your order number, a description of the issue, and your workshop invoice. We'll guide you through diagnosis and, where approved, repair or replacement — and we'll work directly with your mechanic to sort it. Full warranty terms →
