About the G4KD Engine

The G4KD is Hyundai and Kia’s 2.0 litre Theta II port injected four cylinder, fitted to the Hyundai i45 and ix35 and to the Kia Sportage and Cerato between 2008 and 2014. Unlike its direct injection relatives it runs multi point injection with dual CVVT, and for most of its life it is an unremarkable, reliable engine.

Then it starts burning oil.

Here is what is actually happening. The catalytic converter substrate breaks down with age, and on deceleration and overrun the engine draws some of that loose ceramic material back up into the combustion chambers. Ceramic is harder than the cylinder wall. Every particle that gets in there scores the bore, the rings lose their seal, and the engine begins consuming oil — first a litre between services, then a litre a month, then blue smoke and a knock. Timing chain stretch before 150,000 kilometres and hardening gaskets fill out the picture.

The part most sellers will not tell youIf you fit a new engine and leave the failed catalytic converter in place, the new engine will be destroyed exactly the same way. Have your mechanic inspect or replace the converter as part of the job. It costs a fraction of doing this twice.

Port Injection, Not Direct Injection

This is where most ordering mistakes happen, so it is worth being clear about. The G4KD is a port injected 2.0 litre engine. The 2.4 litre G4KJ and the 2.0 litre G4NC are both GDI direct injection. Different fuel systems, different cylinder heads, different calibration. They do not interchange, and the code stamped on your block is the only thing that settles it — not the badge on the boot, and not the year.

Be careful of used G4KD engines. Be careful of used G4KD engines pulled from wrecked cars. On this engine in particular, bore scoring is invisible from the outside, and a compression test on a cold engine can read perfectly normal on a bore that is already scored. You will not know until it is fitted and burning oil.

What cars have the G4KD engine?

Why does my G4KD burn oil?

Almost always bore scoring. The catalytic converter substrate breaks down and is drawn back into the cylinders on overrun, where the ceramic material scores the bore. The rings stop sealing and oil consumption climbs steadily. It is the defining failure of this engine.

Will a new engine fix the oil consumption permanently?

Only if the catalytic converter is dealt with at the same time. Fit a new engine behind a failed converter and the new bores will be scored the same way. Ask your mechanic to inspect or replace it as part of the job.

Can bore scoring in a G4KD be repaired?

The block can sometimes be bored oversize, but by the time most G4KD engines are diagnosed there is ring, piston and often bearing damage as well, and the cost converges on a new long motor with none of the warranty.

What is the difference between a G4KD and a G4KJ engine?

Displacement and fuel system. The G4KD is 2.0 litre with port injection; the G4KJ is 2.4 litre with GDI direct injection. Despite both being Theta II engines they are completely different units and do not interchange.

What is the difference between a G4KD and a G4NC engine?

Both are 2.0 litre, but the G4KD is a Theta II with port injection while the G4NC is from the Nu family with GDI direct injection. Different block, different head, different fuel system.
