G4LC Engine for Sale — Brand New 1.4L Petrol Crate Engine

The G4LC engine is Hyundai and Kia’s 1.4 litre Kappa four cylinder petrol, and it powers a very large number of small cars on Australian roads — the Hyundai Accent, the Kia Rio and the Kia Stonic, along with the i20 and Ceed in export markets. It is a light, efficient, port injected engine, and for the first hundred and something thousand kilometres it gives almost no trouble.

Then it starts using oil.

Here is what is actually happening. The G4LC was built significantly lighter than the G4FA it replaced, and much of that weight came out of the connecting rod and piston assembly. Around the 150,000 kilometre mark that reduced material begins to show as ring and piston wear. The rings lose their seal, oil consumption climbs, and because these are small capacity engines that get worked hard in traffic it can escalate quickly once it starts. Left alone, the engine runs low on oil between checks and the bearings follow.

Timing chain stretch under hard driving, noisy injectors and water pump failures round out the list.

Be careful of used G4LC engines. Be careful of used G4LC engines from wreckers. On this engine the failure is gradual ring wear rather than a dramatic event, which means a used one can look and sound perfectly healthy while already halfway to the same problem. A compression test will not reliably catch it. You find out six months later when it starts using oil.
