Professionally Remanufactured Honda Civic R18Z1 Engine
This Honda Civic R18Z1 Engine is a professionally remanufactured 1.8-litre petrol long motor suitable for selected Australian Honda Civic FC6 sedan and FK5 hatchback models manufactured between 2016 and 2021.
The R18Z1 belongs to Honda’s R-Series engine family. It uses a 1,799cc inline four-cylinder configuration with a single overhead camshaft, 16 valves, i-VTEC valve technology, electronic drive-by-wire throttle control and Honda PGM-FI multipoint fuel injection. In Australian specification, the engine produces approximately 104kW at 6,500rpm and 174Nm at 4,300rpm. It was fitted to selected naturally aspirated Civic VTi and VTi-S models with a Continuously Variable Transmission.
The Civic FC6 Replacement Engine provides an alternative to purchasing a second-hand motor with unknown kilometres, service history or internal wear.

Earlier R18Z1 Applications
The R18Z1 engine code was also used in selected earlier Honda Civic FB applications in some markets.
This listing is written specifically for the 2016–2021 FC6 and FK5 Civic. Earlier FB-series vehicles require separate fitment verification because their external components, wiring, intake system, emissions equipment and transmission arrangement may differ.
Important Civic Engine Differences
Not every 2016–2021 Honda Civic uses this Honda Civic R18Z1 Engine. This motor does not directly replace:
- × L15B7 1.5L turbo engines
- × Civic VTi-L turbo engines
- × Civic RS turbo engines
- × Civic VTi-LX turbo engines
- × K20C1 Civic Type R engines
- × Civic Hybrid powertrains
- × Earlier R18A1 engines without verification
- × R18A2 engines
- × R18Z4 European applications
- × Honda HR-V R18Z9 engines
Although these engines may belong to related Honda engine families, the cylinder heads, compression ratios, intake systems, sumps, sensors, emissions components, wiring and ECU calibration can differ.
When Is an R18Z1 Replacement Engine Required?
A replacement engine may be required when the original motor has suffered serious damage or is no longer economical to rebuild. Possible symptoms include:
- • Excessive engine-oil consumption
- • Persistent blue or white exhaust smoke
- • Low compression
- • Difficult starting
- • Engine overheating
- • Coolant loss
- • Cylinder-head or head-gasket damage
- • Timing-chain noise
- • Low engine-oil pressure
- • Crankshaft or bearing noise
- • Internal knocking
- • Valve damage
- • Piston or cylinder damage
- • Metal contamination in the lubrication system
Systems to Inspect Before Installation
Cooling-system inspection
The complete cooling system must be inspected, flushed and pressure-tested before installation. The workshop should check:
- ✓ Radiator condition and coolant flow
- ✓ Cooling fans and fan-control system
- ✓ Thermostat
- ✓ Radiator cap
- ✓ Coolant hoses
- ✓ Heater circuit
- ✓ Coolant reservoir
- ✓ Water pump
- ✓ Coolant-temperature sensors
A blocked radiator, faulty thermostat, failed fan or unresolved coolant leak can overheat and damage the replacement Civic FC6 Replacement Engine.
Intake, fuel and ignition inspection
The intake manifold, throttle body, fuel rail and injectors must be inspected before being transferred.
The ignition coils and spark plugs must also be checked. Incorrect fuel delivery or ignition faults can cause misfiring, poor combustion, piston damage or catalytic-converter failure.
Timing and lubrication requirements
The engine is assembled using a new timing chain, new timing-chain guides, a new tensioner and new timing gears. The installer must still confirm correct mechanical timing before the engine is started.
Use new engine oil and a new oil filter. Prime the lubrication system before startup so the engine develops oil pressure before operating.
Professional Engine Installation
This Honda Civic R18Z1 Engine must be installed by a qualified mechanic familiar with Honda i-VTEC engines and CVT-equipped vehicles. Before installation, the workshop should:
- 1Confirm the R18Z1 engine number
- 2Diagnose the original engine failure
- 3Inspect every transferred component
- 4Flush and pressure-test the cooling system
- 5Clean the intake manifold and throttle body
- 6Test the fuel injectors
- 7Inspect the ignition coils
- 8Install new spark plugs where required
- 9Install new oil, coolant and filters
- 10Prime the lubrication system
- 11Verify mechanical timing
- 12Scan and clear diagnostic trouble codes
- 13Complete the Honda idle-learning procedure
- 14Inspect for oil, coolant and fuel leaks
- 15Confirm correct oil pressure
- 16Confirm correct operating temperature
Australia-Wide Delivery and Warranty
