The G4FJ engine is Hyundai and Kia’s 1.6 litre turbocharged direct injection four cylinder — the engine behind the i30 N-Line, Elantra, Kona, Veloster Turbo, Tucson and Kia Cerato GT. It makes serious power for its size, and that is exactly why it is less forgiving than the naturally aspirated engines sold alongside it.

Three things end them.

Spark plugs — and this one surprises peopleOn this engine, plugs that are worn, incorrect, or left in too long do not simply misfire. They can break up. The fragments go into the cylinder, score the bore, and the detonation that follows can crack or hole a piston. It has happened on engines as young as 40,000 to 50,000 kilometres.

If you take one thing from this page: use the specified plugs and change them on schedule. On a turbo engine, a sixty dollar part failing takes the whole engine with it.

Turbocharger failure

The turbocharger is not this engine’s strongest component, and oil leakage shows up at surprisingly low mileage. When one lets go it can send oil and debris straight into the engine.

Cylinder liner wear

The liners are thin walled and go oval with age, which shows up as steadily climbing oil consumption. Add timing chain wear and carbon build up on the intake valves — unavoidable on any direct injection engine — and you have the full picture.

Before You Fit It: Deal With the Turbo

This is the most important thing on this page, and it is specific to the turbocharged engines.

If your turbocharger failed, or fed oil into the engine, do not fit a new engine behind it. A damaged turbo will push oil and debris into a brand new engine and destroy it exactly the way it destroyed the last one. And if the engine failure contaminated the oil system, the turbo has been fed that same contaminated oil, so its bearings are on borrowed time regardless.

Have your mechanic:

✓ Inspect or replace the turbocharger
✓ Replace the oil feed and return lines, or at minimum flush them thoroughly
✓ Fit new spark plugs to the correct specification, not a cheaper equivalent
✓ Replace the oil cooler if fitted, and the intercooler if oil has passed through it

It adds to the job. It costs far less than doing the whole thing twice, and it is the difference between a warranty that holds and one that does not.

Worth saying plainly. A remap or piggyback controller on a G4FJ raises boost and cylinder pressure on an engine that is already working hard in standard form, and it is a common factor in the failures we see.

Talk to us first. Our warranty covers manufacturing defects under normal use. An engine that fails under elevated boost is not a manufacturing defect, and we would rather tell you that before you order than argue about it afterwards. If your car is tuned, talk to us first.

Be especially careful with used G4FJ engines. This engine’s failures are often invisible on inspection — a scored bore from a broken plug, or liner wear from age, will not show up in a cold compression test. And you have no idea what boost the previous owner was running.
