G4NA Engine For Sale
G4NA Engine for Sale — Brand New 2.0L Petrol Crate Engine
The G4NA engine is Hyundai and Kia’s 2.0 litre port injected Nu four cylinder, fitted to the Elantra, Tucson, Kia Cerato, Soul and Sportage from around 2014. It is the simpler of the two 2.0 litre Nu engines — no direct injection hardware, no high pressure pump — and on paper it should be the more durable of the pair.
In practice it has one specific failure that has taken out a very large number of these engines. And it starts somewhere most people would not think to look. Every G4NA engine for sale on this page is brand new, built to current production standard with that fault designed out.

Why G4NA Engines Fail
On a significant run of these engines the piston rings were not heat treated correctly, and they wear early. Worn rings stop sealing, and the engine begins consuming oil.
Here is the part that catches people out: it does not leak, it does not smoke much at first, and nothing on the dashboard tells you. The level just quietly drops.
Once the oil runs low, the connecting rod bearings are the first thing to go without lubrication. They seize onto the crankshaft journals and score them. What began as a ring problem ends as a rhythmic metallic hammering that rises and falls with engine speed.
That is rod knock. By the time you can hear it, the crankshaft is damaged and the engine is finished.
The problem was significant enough overseas to trigger recall programs, along with a software system that listens for the early stages of ring wear and puts the car into limp mode before the bearings let go.
If Your Car Is Not Knocking Yet — Check Your Oil
This is the most useful thing on this page, and it costs nothing.
If you own one of these cars and it is out of warranty, check the oil level every couple of weeks, not every service. The entire failure chain depends on the engine running low without anyone noticing. An owner who tops it up stays ahead of it. An owner who trusts the service interval finds out when it knocks.
- 1Using oil between services — roughly a litre every 800 to 1,600 km is the common pattern
- 2Faint blue or grey smoke, worst on start up or under load
- 3A light tick from the top of the engine
- 4Rhythmic metallic knocking that speeds up with the revs — stop driving it
G4NA or G4NC? Check Before You Order
Both are 2.0 litre Nu engines, and both went into the Tucson, Sportage and Cerato in overlapping years. They are not interchangeable.
What Cars Have the G4NA Engine?
The G4NA engine for sale on this page suits the following Australian applications:
| Vehicle | Series | Years |
|---|---|---|
| Hyundai Elantra | AD | 2015–2020 |
| Hyundai Tucson | — | 2015–2017 |
| Kia Cerato | Series 2 | 2016–2018 |
| Kia Soul | PS | 2014–2020 |
| Kia Sportage | QL | 2015–2021 |
Shopping for a specific car rather than by engine code? Each fitment has its own listing with the application already confirmed: Hyundai Elantra 2.0 engine, Hyundai Tucson 2.0 engine, Kia Cerato 2.0 engine, Kia Soul engine and Kia Sportage 2.0 engine.
Common G4NA Engine Problems — and What We Have Done About Them
| Symptom | What is actually happening | Our engine |
|---|---|---|
| Using a litre of oil between services | Piston ring wear, the root cause of nearly every G4NA failure | Correctly specified rings, new bore to factory tolerance |
| Blue or grey smoke, worst on start up | Rings no longer sealing | Fresh bore and ring pack |
| Light ticking from the top of the engine | Early valvetrain noise as oil pressure drops | New head and valvetrain |
| Rhythmic metallic knock rising with revs | Rod bearings have seized and scored the crankshaft journals | New crankshaft, rods and bearings to factory clearance |
| Oil pressure light, metal in the drained oil | Bearing material breaking up through the oil system | New rotating assembly, oil pressure verified on the hot test |
| Rattle on cold start that quietens | Timing chain wear | Current production chain, guides and tensioner |

G4NA Engine FAQs
What cars have the G4NA engine?
The G4NA 2.0 litre port injected petrol engine was fitted to the Hyundai Elantra (AD) and Tucson, and to the Kia Cerato, Soul (PS) and Sportage (QL), across roughly 2014 to 2021.
Why does my G4NA burn oil?
Piston ring wear. On a significant run of these engines the rings were not heat treated correctly and wear early, so they stop sealing. The engine consumes oil without leaking or smoking heavily, which is what makes it dangerous, because the level drops without anyone noticing.
What causes the knocking noise in a G4NA?
The oil consumption left unchecked. Once the level runs low the connecting rod bearings starve, seize onto the crankshaft journals and score them. That produces a rhythmic metallic knock that rises with engine speed. By the time you hear it, the crankshaft is damaged.
Can a knocking G4NA be repaired?
Not reliably. The crankshaft journals are scored and the bearing material is gone, and replacing bearing shells on a damaged crank buys months rather than years. A new long motor is the repair that holds.
How do I stop this happening to my next engine?
Check the oil level every couple of weeks rather than relying on the service interval. The whole failure chain depends on the engine running low without anyone noticing. Our engines are built with correctly specified rings, so consumption should not be the issue it was, but on any engine checking the oil is the cheapest insurance there is.
What is the difference between a G4NA and a G4NC engine?
Both are 2.0 litre Nu engines, but the G4NA is port injected and the G4NC is GDI direct injection. Different cylinder heads, different fuel systems, different calibration, and they do not interchange. If there is a high pressure fuel pump bolted to your cylinder head, you have a G4NC.
Is the G4NA engine brand new or reconditioned?
Brand new. Current production, hot tested before dispatch, with QR video proof supplied.
Does the G4NA engine include free postage?
Yes. Every G4NA engine ships with free postage Australia wide, fully insured and tracked.
